Building A Tiki Bar

Building a tiki bar is the first step to having a rocking Hawaii themed party. They can be incredibly expensive to buy but happily there are simple plans available on the Internet which will save you plenty of cash. The following is one of the simplest, cheapest and yet very effective tiki bars you can make.

There are not too many materials that you need when building this tiki bar – lengths of strong bamboo, straw matting, twine, a hammer and some tacks. The bamboo can normally be purchased from plant nurseries. You are best with bamboo that has dried out to a yellow color as green bamboo can change shape and warp your tiki bar. Straw matting can be found at plant nurseries, pool stores or home decoration centres.

The first step of building a tiki bar is to lay the pieces on top of each other to form a rectangle. You can choose the dimension that suits your personal tiki bar needs. Hammering into bamboo can lead to it splitting so instead tie the four points where the bamboo overlaps together using transom knots: ensure they are tied securely. Then repeat the process again so that you have two rectangular frames of the same size. When you have the two rectangles complete you need to tack on your straw matting to cover the frames.

Next cut six pieces of bamboo of the same length. This is going to form the depth of the bar, so make them the dimension that you want the bar to be ( a comfortable distance for your serving arm is best). You will tie one bit of bamboo to each of the ends and another in the center of the frame to act as the support.

Now you are going to cut bamboo pieces to form the bench of the tiki bar. The bamboo pieces should be approximately the same size, but a little bit of difference can just add to the charm. Lay the bamboo pieces along the top and gently tack them into place until the top of the bar is finished.

The final part of building a tiki bar is to get creative with your decoration. Browse the plant nursery, pool store and other likely locations to pick up some tropical themed decorations: shells, coconuts, candles, frangipanis or hibiscus, tiki masks and statues all add a little more tiki flavor to your bar. Now you are ready to mix up a cocktail storm and enjoy using your newly built tiki bar.
